Class of 2021: Timothy Hinton
Timothy, from Sandusky, OH, started attending OSU as a high school student through the Academy Program. He became further immersed in the buckeye experience while attending Buckeye Student Leadership Academy, and at the end of the program, didn’t want to leave; he found his college home. Psychology interested Timothy because he wanted to learn more about the human mind and, “spread joy, love and serenity throughout this world, and I believe that psychology for me is a gateway to producing initiatives, organizations, and platforms that inspire positive changes one individual at a time.”
During his nearly four years at Ohio State, Timothy became very involved across campus. He recently started a wellness initiative called “Black Wellness Initiative”. Since he worked as a Wellness Coach through the Student Wellness Center, he wanted to take the skills he learned and help others from a different angle. Per Timothy, the purpose of this initiative is “to provide a resource for students who look like me to be comfortable receiving peer to peer coaching, education on positive coping strategies, and an opportunity to learn skills that enhance their emotional intelligence within the workspace. I have trained a group of Black Students who will give their time coaching, presenting, and delivering resources.” Beyond wellness, Timothy also served as a Bell National Resource Center Ambassador, a Youth Mentor, and William Pickard Scholar; an FYE Peer Leader (19-20); an Ubuntu Leadership Institute Mentor, and a Meditation Facilitator! He is also the creator and president of the Black Humanities Student Org and was able to study abroad in Brazil.
After graduating this May, Timothy plans to pursue dual degrees in Sport and Human Performance and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He hopes to work with top-class performers, including those from underserved populations; “I have hopes to improve development of emotional intelligence in younger populations to diminish prejudice, improve performance, and increase feelings of love, joy and peace within the world!”
