Class of 2020: Jordan Mathew
Jordan, from right here in Columbus, OH, chose Ohio State because his mother completed her graduate degree as an international student and he wanted to continue the buckeye legacy. He chose psychology because, “Seeing people thrive in an organization is fulfilling to me, and once I discovered Industrial-Organizational Psychology and got the chance to explore the field through courses taught by Professor Polifroni here at Ohio State, I knew it was a great fit for me.”
He is currently working on an undergraduate thesis under the supervision of social psychology professor Dr. Wegener that looks at the effectiveness of “Corporate Mantras” in organizations. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a graduate degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology, and felt the thesis would help him reach that goal.
Outside of the classroom, Jordan won one of 16 Alumni Association Scholarships, is shooting a documentary that focuses on religion, comedy, and the LGBTQ+ community, and enjoys attending psychology events. His favorite is the Stop! And Think! Film series, which he states really “broadened my perspective” on serious issues, specifically sexual assault on college campuses.
His advice to other psychology majors? Explore the classes and events that interest you in this broad field: “You don't need to feel boxed in if you aren't sure what you want to do yet . . . explore the topics you enjoy and find out what your specific skills and interests would be most suited to.”
