Title: Extending and Examining Concepts of Within-person Change: Insights from Intensive Longitudinal Data
Abstract: Many theoretical perspectives in psychology and communication describe within-person change processes, although empirical testing typically examines between-person differences. Stated differently, researchers often address questions about “who” instead of questions about “when” and “how.” In this talk, I share how an exemplar N = 1 examination of an individual’s passively observed smartphone use can be used to theorize and analyze within-person app use processes. My hope is that increased clarity in the conceptualization and testing of within-person processes will advance psychological and communication theories.
The Social Behavior Interest Group consists of members of the university community who are interested in social psychological research. The SBIG supports an active program of visiting speakers. The group meets weekly to hear speakers describe their recent research. Since 1990, SBIG has brought in numerous distinguished visiting speakers. Presentations have included contemporary issues in the study of attitudes, social cognition, prejudice & stereotyping, and also applied research questions in the domains of health and consumer behavior.
