PSYCH 4571: Psychology of Developmental Disabilities
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to some important issues that psychologists and other professionals encounter when providing services for and interacting with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This course will cover topics related to a wide variety of types of disabilities, including intellectual disability (ID), genetic and medical conditions, and autism spectrum disorders.
At the conclusion of this course, students should have a basic understanding of how developmental disabilities are diagnosed, common problems (e.g., behavior problems, mental health issues, health problems) that co-occur with developmental disabilities, how individuals with developmental disabilities are supported in their daily lives (e.g., education, treatment, medication), and some of the historical and ethical issues that relate to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. 20-hr off-campus practicum req.
Prereq: A grade of C- or above in 2220 and 2300.
